  1. Great Britain Women selected to represent Team GB at London 2012 Olympic Games
On the day the Olympic Flame arrives in the UK, the British Olympic Association (BOA) has announced the selection of the 100th athlete to Team GB, with the announcement of the 16 athletes who will represent Team GB in women's hockey at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Since the 2008 Olympic Games, Team GB hockey athletes have won medals at eight major World or European competitions. The run of success includes England's bronze medal victories in the World Cup, European Championships, Commonwealth Games and Champions Trophy, Scotland's bronze medal at the Champions Challenge and European Championships II and Great Britain's recent silver medal at the Champions Trophy.
The team will be looking to improve on their sixth place finish at the last Olympics in Beijing and inspire the nation by challenging for a medal in London this summer. They are currently ranked fourth in the world, having enjoyed a consistent rise up the rankings from 11th over the past six years under the leadership of Head Coach Danny Kerry.
Great Britain won the Olympic test event at the Riverbank Arena in the Olympic Park earlier this month; beating world number two team Argentina in the final, just three months after losing to the World Champions 1-0 in the final of the Champions Trophy.
The squad, which includes players from Scotland, Wales and England, was announced at the London Stock Exchange on Friday morning. Captain Kate Walsh was responsible for officially opening market trading.
The selected athletes are: (Name, born, hometown, age)
    Ashleigh Ball (Brighton, Cheltenham, 26)
    Laura Bartlett (Glasgow, 23)
    Crista Cullen (Boston, London, 26)
    Alex Danson (Southampton, Odiham, 26)
    Hannah Macleod (Huntingdon, 27)
    Emily Maguire (Paisley, 23)
    Anne Panter (Wellingborough, 28)
Helen Richardson (Hitchin, West Bridgford, 30)
    Chloe Rogers (Great Dunmow, 27)
    Beth Storry (Reading, 32)
    Sarah Thomas (Merthyr Tydfil, 31)
    Georgie Twigg (Lincoln, 21)
    Laura Unsworth (Sutton Coldfield, 24)
    Kate Walsh (Stockport, 32)
    Sally Walton (Solihull, 27)
    Nicola White (Oldham, 24)
    Two reserve athletes are:
    Natalie Seymour (Maidstone, 24)
    Abi Walker (Glasgow, 30)
The addition of the 16 women's hockey players brings the total number of athletes officially selected to Team GB for London 2012 to 101 across eight sport disciplines: archery, athletics - marathon, boxing, canoe slalom, hockey, sailing, swimming and synchronised swimming.
The athletes were formally nominated to the BOA for selection to Team GB by Great Britain Hockey, the National Governing Body for hockey in the UK.
Team GB Chef de Mission Andy Hunt said:
"On this historic day for the British Olympic Movement, as the Olympic Flame arrives in the UK, I am delighted to welcome the women's hockey squad as officially selected members of Team GB for London 2012.
"The progress made by the women's hockey team over the last six years has been outstanding. They have consistently medalled at major international Championships over the last two years and are now ranked fourth in the world. With victory in the recent test event on the Olympic Park, the team demonstrated their capability to beat the best sides in the world and compete for the Olympic medal podium this summer.
"Over 600,000 people will see first-hand the speed, skill and excitement involved in the game of hockey as they attend matches at the fantastic Riverbank Arena during the Games. With the passionate and vocal support of the home crowd behind them, the Team GB women's hockey team will have a great opportunity to write themselves into the history books and create a lasting legacy for the sport across the UK with their inspirational performances."
Team GB Women's Hockey Head Coach Danny Kerry said:
"Words cannot describe how difficult it has been to make the final decision in selecting this squad. Since we centralised our training programme in late 2009, our process has been continuous, making it our most thorough and exhaustive ever.
"We have chosen what we feel is the best combination of players for the challenges of the Olympic Games. Each and every one of the 28 athletes in the training group has committed so much and as a result we have the most powerful squad spirit I have ever known.
"I want to offer my congratulations to those that have been selected who I know will do our squad proud in London. I also want to offer my most heartfelt commiserations to those that have not been selected - they have given everything."
Great Britain Hockey Performance Director David Faulkner said:
"Olympic selection is always something that every athlete will remember. The moment confirmation comes that they will become an Olympian lives with them forever.
"What is impressive about this women's hockey group is the collective manner in which they've approached the programme over the last four years. This group is incredibly special - I know that those not selected will give 100% support to those that have been."
Team GB Women's Hockey Captain Kate Walsh said:
"I feel very honoured and privileged to have been selected to represent our squad at the London Olympic Games.  We have progressed so far as a group over the last few years and I am looking forward to giving it everything we've got in front of jubilant home crowd."
    Alex Danson said:
"It's a huge, unbelievable honour! As a child and as an athlete you dream of going to an Olympic Games but to have the opportunity to play at the Olympic Games in your own country is simply incredible.
"I'm so excited to be able to share the experience with my family and friends. They have been my support network throughout and to have them around me will be a tremendous help.
"Our programme has provided us with the best preparation we've ever had. Being able to train full time at Bisham Abbey has helped us engender the fantastic team ethos and squad mentality that makes it so great to be part of this team."
    Helen Richardson said:
"I feel extremely privileged to have been selected to represent Team GB for a third Olympic Games. There's no better feeling than playing for Great Britain, and having the chance to compete in front of a home crowd will be truly inspiring.
"The squad selected represents a wider training group and we'll do absolutely everything in our power to make them proud."
    Laura Bartlett said:
"I am absolutely delighted to be selected to represent my country and I cannot wait to play in front of the passionate British crowds. To be named in the squad for London is the ultimate prize for the past four years of hard work.
"I am particularly looking forward to playing in front of a packed house at the Riverbank Arena and hopefully we can build on our successes at recent tournaments, including the Visa International Invitational hockey test event."

  2. Future bright for Watsonians HC
After two years out of the top flight, Watsonians HC have returned to National League 1 after winning a tough play-off encounter against local rivals CALA.
The 4-1 victory vindicates the decisions made by the club last off-season to revitalise its coaching and training set-up and encourage youth development, said Watsonians Vice-Chairman Alasdair Swan.
"With over 400 school children involved in the junior ranks of Watsonians, we have a huge pool of hockey talent coming through," he said. "If we are to encourage and retain those future players, we needed to ensure that they can reach their full potential with our club."
With that objective in mind, in the summer of 2011 the club hired former Scotland and Great Britain international Calum Wood to coach its men's teams.
While Calum has used his expertise and experience to revitalise the club's training, he has also set up a Youth Academy for its most talented younger players. Swan said that this has encouraged youth development within the club and ensured that there is good communication with key stakeholders - including international coaches, school teachers and parents.
"This season, we have had 6 under-18s involved with the first-team squad, with 4 playing week-in, week-out and making a huge contribution to the team's success," said Swan. "The club has been reinvigorated, with more structured training sessions as well as an ethos on everyone enjoying their hockey and having fun."
The results bear out the success of the new approach. With several new signings also fitting in well, the 1st XI went on a 12-game unbeaten run from November to close out the season, culminating in the playoff win.
The challenge now for Watsonians will be to stay in Division 1. But Swan is confident that the new approach means the club are well set for the future.
"There's a strong core of established players at the club, and when you add that to an excellent coaching and training set-up, combined with more players coming through, we're very hopeful that we'll be able to compete well next season," he said.

  4. Great Britain men's squad for Sultan Azlan Shah tournament

The Great Britain men's hockey squad has been announced ahead of the forthcoming Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia.  The seven team invitational tournament will be Great Britain's last competition ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Jason Lee's squad contains two changes to the 18 man group that competed at the Visa International Invitational Hockey Tournament - the Olympic Test Event - at the beginning of the month.  Captain Barry Middleton is restored alongside Surbiton's Beijing Olympian Matt Daly, who returns to competitive action after a six month absence through injury.
Old Loughtonians' Harry Martin and Loughborough Students' Richard Smith have both been included.  The pair have been passed fit after undergoing treatment for facial injuries sustained during the Olympic Test Event.
Daly hasn't played competitive international hockey since late 2011.  The 28 year old played for England at the EuroHockey Nations Championships in Monchengladbach in August, where he was part of the team that won the bronze medal, scoring against Ireland and the Netherlands.  He subsequently played in a series of practice matches before sustaining a knee injury prior to the Champions Trophy.  The Surbiton forward has an excellent goal scoring record that has seen him find the net 57 times in 142 international appearances.
Speaking about Daly's selection, Head Coach Jason Lee said, "It is great that Matt is back playing and potentially available for Olympic selection.  Someone with his goal scoring ability and history in international hockey should be very competitive if fit and able to come into form over the next couple of months. I'm sure he will be rusty to start with as he has only been back working with a stick and ball for a week after many months out."
Speaking about the tournament and how it fits into Great Britain's Olympic preparations Lee continued, "The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is an excellent opportunity to practice the type of tournament hockey we will experience at the Olympics and we will be approaching it with the intention of winning it - the same as our approach for the Olympics.  The tournament has seven high quality teams, six of which will be at the Olympics, and it includes a number of teams that we rarely get to play.
"The climate of Malaysia will be testing for our athletes, although we will complete a short acclimation programme before we leave, which will hopefully make it easier for the players to cope in the first few games.
"It is likely that the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup will be used to complete the Olympic selection process, although our focus whilst there will be entirely on the team's performance and the attempt to win the tournament."
The tournament will be played on a blue surface similar to that installed at the Riverbank Arena on London's Olympic Park.  Great Britain's men are the top ranked side for the 11 day invitational tournament that features New Zealand, Korea, India, Pakistan, Argentina and the hosts Malaysia.  New Zealand's Black Sticks are the Commonwealth Games bronze medallists while Argentina's men won the 2011 Pan American Games hockey tournament in October 2011.  Three of the competing teams, Pakistan, Malaysia and India, filled the three medal spots at the 2010 Asian Games and most recently India won the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Delhi in February.  Great Britain twice beat India at the Visa International Invitational Hockey Tournament. At the Champions Trophy in December 2011, Great Britain beat Pakistan 2-1 and Korea 4-3.
Great Britain won the bronze medal at the 2011 tournament, finishing third behind winners Australia and runners-up Pakistan.  GB beat New Zealand 4-1 in the bronze medal playoff.

  5. Governance Review 2012 Update - first draft Action Plan now available

Further to initial discussion and request to Scottish Hockey at the 2011 AGM, and with the new CEO in place, Scottish Hockey's Board commissioned a comprehensive audit of its governance in January 2012.

A first draft of the Governance Action Plan has now been produced and is available to download on the Governance Review page. The report and matrix, produced following the first stage of the audit, is also available to download.

The aim was to formulate and implement an action plan to ensure Scottish Hockey is well positioned to achieve future ambitions, with the potential move to Glasgow as a catalyst, while also mindful of the need to extend the current strategic plan beyond its current lifetime of December 2014.

A Short Life Working Group was established to review the outcome of the initial audit report, in advance of recommendations being brought back to the Board for approval and action.

For more information about the Governance Review, please contact us.
